The Volcano Book for Children, Mums, Dads and Teachers is written for children who are fascinated by volcanoes. At the same time adults will also enjoy learning about volcanoes. The book tells you where you can go and see some volcanoes and which ones are the most deadly. Rick Lomas wrote this book because his eldest daughter Madeline kept asking him questions about volcanoes. Rick says: "When Madeline was about 7 years old she was quite shocked when she realised we had taken her on holiday to Lanzarote when she was just one year old. Madeline always liked to call Lanzarote, ‘Volcano Island’. Even when she was quite little she would want to know how dangerous volcanoes were and where to go and see some. I guess when her younger sister Rosalie gets a little bit bigger she will be asking me similar questions too!" So this book is for children and for their parents too. Teachers will find this useful too. It is not too complicated, but at the same time no important points have been skipped over. It is almost impossible to talk about volcanoes without knowing what a pyroclastic flow or a lahar is, so that is all explained in here. The book concludes with a 'Volcano Dictionary' which explains all the technical terms that you might come across when learning about volcanoes.Rick was temptied to make this book a light hearted and fun book, but the truth is that volcanoes have killed thousands and thousands of people since the earth began. The Lake Toba eruption nearly wiped humans off the planet completely! Although the danger of death by volcano is fairly low these days, it is good to know what has happened in the past and what could happen in the future. The unknown is what makes volcanoes so exciting. Hopefully you will have fun reading this and learn something at the same time. The book is aimed to be as entertaining and informative as it possibly can be whilst still being accurate and packed with good information. Here are some the topics covered:What is a Volcano?Magma ChambersWhat are Tectonic Plates? What is a Caldera?Active VolcanoesDormant VolcanoesExtinct VolcanoesThe Ring of FireAre volcanos dangerousLava FlowPyroclastic FlowLaharsPoisonous GasesVolcanic AshDifferent types of volcanoFissure ventsShield volcanoesLava domesCryptodomesVolcanic cones or Cinder ConesStratovolcanoes or composite volcanoesSupervolcanoesDifferent Types of Volcanic EruptionsHawaiian EruptionsStrombolian EruptionsVulcanian EruptionsPeléan EruptionsPlinian eruptionsThe nice things about volcanoesThe top 10 volcanoes to go and see1) Stromboli, Italy2) Kilauea, Hawaii3) Etna, Sicily, Italy4) Teide, Tenerife, Spain5) Mount Ruapehu, New Zealand6) Mount Fuji, Japan7) Cotopaxi, Ecuador8) Sierra Negra, Galapagos9) Yellowstone Supervolcano, Wyoming, USA10) Montserrat, West IndiesThe top 10 most deadly volcanoes ever1) Mount Pelée, Martinique2) Krakatoa, Indonesia3) Mount Tambora, Indonesia4) Mount Vesuvius5) Mount Unzen, Japan6) Nevado del Ruiz, Columbia7) Laki and Grimsvötn, Iceland8) Santorini, Greece9) Huaynaputina, Peru10) Lake Toba, IndonesiaFind out more about volcanoesVolcano DictionaryThe book is most suitable for children age 8 onwards.
